Kendall College Brings “Study Abroad” to Students’ Doorstep

First Master Class Conducted on Thai Culture & Cuisine

CHICAGO, April 27, 2011—The Kendall College School of Culinary Arts is launching a series of master classes to bring the “study abroad” experience to the doorstep of its students. The program includes an intensive, 10-day master class for culinary arts students taught by chef instructors and representatives from the featured country.

The first class in the series, featuring the cuisine and culture of Thailand, was conducted earlier this month. The program was presented in partnership with Arun Sampanthavivat, chef/owner of the nationally acclaimed restaurant Arun’s, in Chicago, and the Thai Royal Consulate-General. Two nationally renowned chefs from Thailand, Chachaya Raktakanishta and Nathathai Chonglerttham, traveled to the United States to lead the master class. As part of the class, Kendall students, with the guidance of their instructors, prepared an authentic Thai luncheon featuring the various regional cuisines of the country.

“Our students went on an amazing culinary journey,” stated Christopher Koetke, CEC, CCE, vice president of Laureate International Universities Center of Excellence in Culinary Arts and executive director of the Kendall College School of Culinary Arts. “This program adds tremendous value. Exposure to new ingredients, new cultures and new traditions will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration and expand their horizons.”

The master series will be presented three times each year during quarter breaks. The next master class will be held June 27 – July 9, 2011 and will focus on the cuisine and culture of Mexico, in partnership with the Mexican government and the culinary program at Universidad del Valle de Mexico.
